Otoplasty – Protruding earlobes correction

Description of the procedure

About the Surgery

Otoplasty includes correction of protruding auricles and other deformations, including correction of damaged earlobes.

Who Is It Intended for?

If the indication is congenital, we recommend performing ear surgery at preschool or early school age, ideally at the age of 5-10. The child thus avoids possible negative reactions from his surroundings. Adults can also undergo the surgery, for the same reasons – congenital or acquired deformity or unaesthetic position of the ears.

Ear plastic surgery can be performed under both general or local anaesthesia. In younger children, general anaesthesia is preferred more often, which, however, entails the need for pre-operative examination.

Procedure

In the most common ear surgery, i.e. the correction of protruding auricles, the incision is made on the back of the ear, so the future scar is inconspicuously hidden. The doctor releases the skin from the cartilage, grinds the cartilage in the back of the ear or partially squeezes it and removes excess skin. Then the auricles are pulled into a suitable position to the head and stitched. An elastic bandage is stretched over the ears.

The surgery of protruding auricles usually takes 1 hour.

Post surgery

  • The outpatient check-up and removal of the elastic bandage follows 1 week after the procedure. The sutures are not removed, they are absorbable.
  • During the second week after the procedure, it is necessary to constantly wear a special medical headband.
  • Subsequently, it is necessary to wear this headband for another week to sleep.
  • Absorption of swelling and bruising takes about 2 weeks.
